I came from vacation, did some fitness, saw how I was feeling and said, 'You know what, I practiced so much the past year, let's go play some matches'. The second-seeded Federer continued his mastery over 12th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

"Plus I feel comfortable at the net so why not spend some time up there instead of slugging it out from the baseline?" The 36-year-old Swiss will next face unseeded Dutchman Robin Haase, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victor over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

World number three Federer, who faces Dutchman Robin Haase in the lsat four, was never seriously pushed by Spains Bautista Agut, who is winless in seven matches against the Swiss maestro.

"I'm very happy that I've made it here", he said.

Federer said he knows Haase well from serving with him on the ATP player council and from practicing together. "Sometimes he tends to just roll the ball in and use the big serve, or he uses a slice a lot and comes in". I just played loose after that, just went with it.

And in yet another moment when it would have been easy to wonder if the 18-year-old Shapovalov would finally break, he proved he was only still bending, coming up with his first break of the match and then holding serve to claim a 2-1 advantage, looking all the more confident doing so. Federer was coming off a three-set win over another Spaniard, David Ferrer, against whom he is 17-0.

Federer has made sure he did not have to spend a lot of time on the court, edging past his opponents easily.

Shapovalov, who became the youngest player ever to enter a Masters 1000 semifinal, beat 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and top-seeded Spanish star Rafael Nadal during his phenomenal run.

"I didn't, but I managed to win because I kept fighting".

But just as Shapovalov had done all week, he came up with some of his best stuff while his back was pinned firmly against the wall.
